Understanding BMI
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple calculation using a person's height and weight. The formula is BMI = kg/m² where kg is a person's weight in kilograms and m² is their height in meters squared.
BMI is an inexpensive and easy screening method for weight categories: underweight, healthy weight, overweight, and obesity. It's important to understand that BMI is a screening method, not a diagnostic tool.
BMI Categories:
- Underweight: BMI less than 18.5
- Normal weight: BMI 18.5 – 24.9
- Overweight: BMI 25 – 29.9
- Obesity: BMI 30 or greater
Limitations of BMI:
Although BMI is widely used as a health indicator, it has limitations. It doesn't consider muscle mass, bone density, and fat distribution. BMI should be assessed with other health measurements and individual factors.
